How to Make Your Work Environment a Healthier Place
If you are a nine-to-fiver, you spend a total of about 2,080 hours a year at work. In most cases the stress level is high and the physical activity low. When you are in a work situation where there is little motivation and the morale levels are depleted, it is clear that your daily work environment is not exactly the most ideal and there is need for some serious changes.
Considering the fact that you spend more than half of your waking hours during weekdays on the job, your work surroundings naturally has a significant effect on your health. If the atmosphere in your workplace is not pleasant, being there day in and day out can take its toll on your emotional and intellectual well-being.
Workplace stress is a serious problem. It results in health conditions that cause people to miss workdays. For the company this translates to high health care costs and loss of performance. When you feel stressed out at work, pause for a while and spend a few moments breathing deeply through your nose. Do these a couple of times before resuming your what you are doing.
The best way to relieve stress is to engage in physical activity. Another way you can make your workplace into a healthier environment is by being nutritionally prepared. Bring healthy snacks to keep you from going for the unhealthy fare on the vending machines. Drink lots of pure water and lessen your intake of any drink laced with caffeine.
Take time to redo your workspace if it is cluttered and disorganized. Make it more functional and conducive to working. It should be comfortable enough to keep you productive without being tempted to doze off. Also, loosen up and change your outlook. Try to smile more often.
Instead of getting angry, take time to listen. It is good to be assertive but do keep in mind that you also cannot control everything. What you can do is control how you react to situations and people. Choose the people you hang around with. Stay away from grumblers and scrooges and surround yourself instead with happy and optimistic people. Not only will their pleasant aura rub off on you, you will also be motivated and inspired.
